Literacy Tutor Training

Literacy Council of the Black Hills

If you would like to experience the challenge and joy of volunteering to help someone learn to read, plan to attend this workshop. The 12-hour course will offer training in how to tutor adults and teens who need help reading and writing, as well as English Language Learners.
The workshop will include instruction in the Laubach Way to Reading, which is an adult series of books and materials that tutors can use to teach specific reading and writing skills. It teaches reading in a meaningful, multi-sensory context and encourages application of skills to real-world tasks. The workshop will also include information to help tutors understand different learning styles, assess learner needs and goals, and find ways to build rapport with adult learners. After completing the workshop, attendees will receive certification as literacy tutors through ProLiteracy.
The suggested donation for the workshop is $30 to cover the cost of workshop materials and a one-year membership in the Literacy Council of the Black Hills. The workshop materials include the teacher’s manual for Book 1 of the Laubach Way to Reading, a resource book and a tutor’s handbook. Food and refreshments will be provided.

Training will be from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, and from 8:30 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, at the Black Hills Workshop.
Please register by Monday, February 16. To register, Express Interest below or call (605) 484-5364 or email
